A HERO STONE: RASHTRAKUTA: GOVINDA,
800 A.D.
This inscription was installed in the second decade
of the ninth century A.D. during the regime of PrabhUtavarSa gOvinda a king
belonging to the Rashtrakuta dynasty. This is obviously a hero stone,
celebrating the valour and sacrifice of a warrior called ‘kulamudda’. More
importantly, this inscription gives us a fair idea of some of the royal
dynasties that were ruling, during the ninth century. Govinda was the monarch.
Rajaditya was the king of the Banavasi region. Chitravahana was ruling in the
coastal region of ALuvakEDa. Chitravahana was quite adamant and did not
accept the feudatory status offered by the emperor. He commands Aditya,
belonging to the clan of Pallava NoLambas to take suitable action. The
kAkarAsas are truly enraged and they attack and climb the fort of Pergganji. A
battle is fought with arrows, bows and horses. Chitravahana is indefatigable
for quite some time. At this juncture, ‘kulamudda’ the protagonist in
this tragic episode is asked to participate in the battle. He enters the fray
and emerges successful. However he too receives a number of wounds. The arrows
formulate a ‘sharapanjara’ a la Bhishma and kulamudda falls. No sooner he is
dead, apsaras arrive at the scene and take him away to heaven with great
respect and adoration. The emissaries of the king who arrive on the spot are
hugely impressed and they praise the valour and courage of kulamudda. They
measure out a generous portion of land and present it to the survivors of
kulamudda. This declaration is followed by a list of persons who have made this
gift deed. As usual, any person who tampers with the gift deed either literally
or by way of his conduct is warned of dire consequences.
This
inscription, as many of its kind offers a succinct account of the situation
prevalent in the feudal society. The subjects are expected to give up their
life in order to win wars for the king. Their death is condoned later, with
some dole in order to appease their families.
