LAND GRANT INSCRIPTION

(dAna shAsana, ದಾನಶಾಸನ)

Introduction: This inscription was installed by the Ganga king Neethimarga Kongunivarma nanniya ganga who was in power during the ninth century. This is an inscription proclaiming a land grant. Land grant inscriptions account for a major share of the inscriptions found in Karnataka. This particular inscription mentions the date of the land grant, the receiver (A Jaina teacher named mAKanDa BaTAra. The land given is in two segments. Consequently two sets of boundaries are mentioned. The boundaries constitute details such as an open field, a hillock, a ditch, a fertile garden etc. Probably, the persons mentioned at the end of the document, are the owners of the lands that border the land which was granted. The inscription ends with the usual warning that any body who defaces the inscriptions or usurps the land will have committed an act equivalent to the sin of killing thousand brown cows. This inscription deviates from the pattern of delineating only the land boundaries in Kannada and the remaining details in Sanskrit. One also notices that the number of Sanskrit words used in the inscription is very few. Most of the Kannada words are essentially Dravidian in origin. The proximity of Ganga kingdom to Tamilnadu may be a reason for this.
