6. A Brief Summary of the work: Gadayuddha is the second epic in Kannada which adapts a vaidic theme and succeeds in giving it Jaina overtones. Deeply influenced by his illustrious predeccessor Pampa, Ranna has chosen Bheema as the hero of the work. In a similar vein, he equates Bheema his protagonist with Iriva Bedanga Satyashraya his mentor and benefactor.  However Duryodhana is celebrated as a tragic hero. Gadayuddha adapts the flash back technique in delineating the major events of Mahabharata and ‘Simhavalokana Krama’ is the name given by Ranna to this particular tool. Ranna is also influenced by ‘Uurubhngam’ of Bhasa and ‘Veni Samhara Natakam’ of Bhatta Narayana. Hence the much appreciated dramatic quality of this popular epic.
