KUDALA SANGAMA
Kudala Sangama (kUDala
sangama) (ಕೂಡಲ
ಸಂಗಮ) is an important place of pilgrimage associated with
Basaveshvara the saint, poet and reformer of the twelfth century. This is
located in the Hunagund talluk of Bagalakote district. This is the meeting
place of the rivers Krishna and
Malaprabha (Ghataprabha also?). There is a temple of Sangamanatha
built in the Chalukya style at Kudalasangama. It is believed that Basavanna,
Chennabasavanna and Akkanagamma spent their childhood and early youth at this
place and that they studied in the institution set up by jAtavEda muni. The
fact that the poems of Basavanna are always tagged with the name of his chosen
deity ‘kUDalasangama dEva’ corroborates this belief. Basavanna returned to kUDalasangama
after the cataclysmic events in KalyANa and merged with his favorite deity.
(Aikya manTapa) An annual fair that takes place at this place draws a number of
devotees.
