ANANTHARNGACHAR N., 1904-1996

 

            Anantharangchar N. (n. anantarangAcAr) (ಅನಂತರಂಗಾಚಾರ್ ಎನ್.) was an erudite scholar with specific interests in textual criticism, ancient Kannada literature and Tamil religious literature. He was born in Thirumakudalu Narasipura a well known pilgrimage center in Mysore district. He was educated in T.Narasipura and Mysore. He obtained a B.A. degree (1927) and M.A. degree in Kannada from the University of Mysore. He got a B.T. degree also from the same institution in 1930. He was awarded a D.Litt. degree for his book ‘sAhityaBArati’ in the year 1974 from the University of Mysore. He worked as Kannada pandit in the Maharaja’s College (1931-32) and the oriental research Institute (1932-42) for more than ten years. Later he became a part of the faculty in the University where he served till his retirement. (1962)

            Anantharangachar has more than 25 published works and a number of articles published in reputed journals and periodicals to his credit. Many of them are diligently prepared editions of ancient classics. He has taken to a number of palm leaf and paper manuscripts in to consideration during his work. His monographs on ancient poets such as Nemichandra, Ranna and Lakshmeesha provide authentic and useful information to general public as well as students of Kannada literature. ‘Sahitybharati’ is a compendium of introductory articles on the history of literatures in various Indian languages.  Another laudable work by Anantharangachar is the voluminous work which gives an alphabetical list of all the poems in all the Champu works that are available in Kannada. Anatharangachar was honored with the life time award of the Karnataka Sahitya Academy in 1974. ‘Ananthanidhi’ is the commemoration volume brought out in his honor.
